Companies building the future of law are looking for people who understand the law, how legal professionals actually work, and which problems technology can solve. That's why legal tech jobs for law students are growing so quickly, and why your legal training could be what sets you apart, even without an engineering background.

If you've ever felt that the only paths out of law school are Big Law, government, or a clerkship, this list is for you. We've rounded up the legal AI ambassador programs, paid internships, and fellowships worth your attention this October, plus a few to keep on your radar. Whether you're a 1L still finding your footing or a 3L thinking past the bar, there's a way in. (If you're still in the thick of coursework, our guide for current law students is a good place to start.)

Legal AI tools are only as good as their understanding of legal work. Someone has to explain why a contract clause matters, how an associate reviews a document, or what a professor expects in an exam answer. That someone is you.

As Upsolve's guide to breaking into legal tech points out, subject matter expertise and the credibility of a law degree help law students perform better in the traditional roles at technology companies. Coding is optional. Product feedback, customer success, partnerships, legal operations, and training all depend on legal knowledge first. Above the Law's list of hot tech jobs for law graduates shows just how wide that range of roles has become, from privacy managers to legal engineers.

Campus programs are the easiest way to get legal tech experience while you're still in school. They fit around your class schedule and put you in direct contact with the teams building the products.

Legora, one of the fastest-growing legal AI companies, is recruiting Student Fellows for the 2026–2027 academic year. Fellows represent Legora on campus, run demos and workshops, and receive one-on-one mentorship from the Legora team, all for about five hours a week.

The program is open to students at law schools in Legora's Legal AI Scholars Program. Legora wants applicants with real leadership experience, so if you've served on a journal, competed in moot court, or led a student organization, put that front and center in your application.

Harvey Law School Ambassador Program: A Paid Way to Build AI Skills

Harvey's Law School Ambassador Program is a paid role for law students who want to stand out as AI-native leaders on campus. Ambassadors run training sessions, share student feedback with Harvey's team, and get extra training and office hours with the people building the product.

Not sure whether your school is part of Harvey's Law School Program? Apply anyway. Harvey reviews applications on a rolling basis, so applying early works in your favor.

LexisNexis Lexis Associate Role: Student Rep Experience on Your Schedule

The Lexis Associate student representative role is open to currently enrolled law students. You'll represent LexisNexis on campus, help classmates get more out of its research tools, and pass student feedback to the company. Because the work is built around your semester, it's one of the most manageable law school student representative jobs available.

Internships give you deeper exposure than campus roles, and many of the best legal AI internships pay well.

Legora Partnerships Internship in Stockholm

If you're open to working abroad, Legora is hiring a Partnerships Intern at its Stockholm headquarters. This paid, full-time role lasts three to six months and is open to law students and recent graduates. You'd help grow one of Legora's most important growth channels, which makes it a strong fit if you enjoy relationship-building as much as legal analysis.

Harvey's 2026 legal internship paid $50 an hour plus $5,000 in housing support for a 12-week program in New York City. Harvey started posting Summer 2027 engineering internships this month, and these listings fill fast. Check Harvey's careers page regularly so you catch the legal intern posting the moment it goes live.

Thomson Reuters Practical Law Internships and Brand Ambassador Roles

Practical Law internships let you draft legal updates, summarize changes to primary law, and learn from attorney editors. If legal research and writing are your strengths, this is a natural fit. Thomson Reuters also hires Student Brand Ambassadors to promote Westlaw, Practical Law, and CoCounsel on campus, so search for both roles on its careers site.

The value of this kind of placement goes beyond your resume. When the Law Society of Scotland asked stakeholders about legal tech internships, the verdict was unanimous: law students gain real value from placements with legal tech companies, alongside more traditional legal employers.

Fellowships suit students who want to solve a specific problem in legal practice, not just learn a product.

Spellbook awarded $25,000 per fellow in its 2026 fellowship program and selects fellows every semester. Each fellow focuses on one broken legal workflow and produces a concrete deliverable, such as a playbook, a prototype concept, or a workflow memo. Watch for the next application cycle.

Your own law school may offer more than you realize. Ask your career services office about legal tech or AI fellowships; Hofstra and WashU both run strong examples. The ABA's fellowship blog series shares how one student's law school innovation fellowship became the start of a career as a legal technologist.

You don't need to learn Python before you apply. You need to show that you understand legal work and can explain it clearly to others. Three things make the biggest difference:

  • Lead with leadership. Journals, moot court, and student organizations prove you can represent a brand and run events.

  • Use the tools before you apply. Many legal AI companies offer free student access, and hands-on experience makes your application specific instead of generic.

  • Show you can explain the law simply. Ambassador roles revolve around teaching classmates, so clear communication is your strongest selling point.

You don't have to wait until you graduate to build a career that looks different from everyone else's. Your law degree can open doors in places you might not have considered yet. You just have to know where to look.

Every one of these roles rewards students who truly understand the core doctrine and can explain it with confidence. That's exactly what The Food Lover's Guide to Law is designed to help you do. It turns legal concepts into vibrant, food-themed visuals that stick, so you can study smarter and walk into any demo, workshop, or interview ready to make the law easy to see. Get your copy here.

Yes. Most legal tech roles open to law students, including ambassador programs, partnerships internships, and research or editorial roles, value legal knowledge and communication skills over technical ability.

Some are. Harvey's Law School Ambassador Program is paid, while other programs offer mentorship, training, and direct access to product teams. Always check the current listing for compensation details.

Start watching careers pages now. Harvey began posting Summer 2027 engineering internships in October, and legal intern postings at popular companies tend to fill quickly.

It's a fellowship for law students who want to fix a specific broken legal workflow. Spellbook awarded $25,000 per fellow in 2026 and selects fellows each semester.

Leadership experience, such as journal, moot court, or student organization roles, combined with hands-on use of legal AI tools and a strong grasp of core legal subjects, gives you the clearest edge.
